- THE BAD IN GOOD CHARLOTTE -
A Dolly Magazine
Interview
These boys dont ever back away from a fight. So we got their bass player, Paul, to tell us what they love
and hate about everything from Justin Timberlake to tattoos.
DISLIKES
Crazy Fans: "Most of our fans are awesome. At one of our Aussie shows, two kids
got up on stage, pulled down their pants, and ran around the stage naked. You dont really see that very often. Im not sure
if its an Australian thing, where you guys are more proud of your bodies, but I thought that was rather interesting. But some
of our fans go too far. One time we played a live gig, which was awesome. But it was a free show, so there were some egg throwers
there. I saw this thing coming towards me and thought, oh, Ive got it. I swatted it, but it cracked all over me, all over
our drummer Chris, and it really sucked. But our manager called the cops on them, so we had the last laugh. I dont think they
got arrested, they just got into a bit of trouble."
Los Angeles: "This album was really inspired by living in
LA. Hollywood is completely different from where we grew up, in this small town. We were living in LA to record the album.
You sit on Sunset strip on a Saturday and its the most retarded thing because everyone is just walking the street in their
most expensive clothes. Or just driving around, doing laps back and fourth trying to impress people with their cars. We arent
used to seeing that type of thing, and seeing how ungrateful people are with their money and how they treat people because
they have it. Living there inspired a lot of songs, like Girls & Boys. The line, Girls dont like boys, girls like cars
and money, its just so true out there.
The Vines: " I went out and bought their CD because Im into that kind
of music, like the Hives, and The White Stripes. I think that guy (Craig Nicolls, from the vines), has an amazing voice. Unfortunately,
its just so obvious he just doesnt like playing live, so he should just not do it. I can see the other guys in the band; theyre
getting frustrated and its just not going to be good. Ive seen them and he wont even sing right, hell just make noises and
fans dont wanna see that shit. It just turns bad and everyone will be like fuck em, we dont like that band anymore. I wish
they weren't doing that because I like them and theyre really nice guys Ive met them at shows. But hell be on stage and hell
look all doped up, then hell come off stage and hell be really nice, its all an act? Just be yourself, bro."
R&B:
"Ive been getting into a lot of 70s R&B because I dont like today's R&B at all. Its all shit. But I know it didnt
start out that way, so I went out and tried to listen to everything I could, like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. Its amazing
how it all turned to shit. Thats why I like Pharrel from N.E.R.D and Justin Timberlake because theyre bringing all of that
back.
LOVES Tattoos: "Ive personally have seven tattoos
but weve all got heaps. Benji, Joel and Billy have all kinds of tattoos. Billy is the super Silverchair fan so hes got Neon
Ballroom tattoo on his arm. The first one I got (and that we all have) is the Good Charlotte emblem, but there are many more
to come."
Australia: "This place is just so gorgeous, you only see stuff like that in the movies. There are
also lots of beautiful girls here. Were not used to seeing so many white girls with tans its very nice and very California.
The first day that we got to Sydney, we went down to the harbor. There are these guys called the rib rats; they take you out
on a navy seal boat which goes about 50 knots, so your just flying over the waves. You go on a little tour first and then
your flying 15 feet in the air over the waves its fantastic. We got it all on video because one of the crazy marines was just
sitting there filming us."
Success: "We cant believe how well Lifestyles of the rich and famous has done. The
whole album has gone over really well here (in Australia), at home in the states, in Europe and Japan. I guess we did a good
job, so you cant complain about that. We had so much fun making it and, to have this great thing come out of it is so much
fun. Its crazy to think that theres probably some kid in Australia with a picture of my band on the wall. Its unreal and really
cool, but were still adjusting to it."
Silverchair: "Ive never really got into them before, but now Ive heard
every CD because Billy is a huge fan. Theyre all good but I just totally fell in love with diorama. Theyre an inspiration
for us because we wanna grow as musicians. What were hoping is that maybe we could get them to open for us. Were playing arenas
now, so I think we could talk them into it. That would be Billy's dream come true every tour, Billys like, Try and get Silverchair
to play with us. We just wanna hang out with them every night and watch them perform.
